My dad always had a handle of Kahlua lying around the house growing up, yet I never saw him drink the coffee liqueur. When asked why we had something we didn’t use, he replied one of his good friends loves a White Russian and we keep it on deck for him.

I learned many lessons from my dad’s handle of Kahlua, one is to always treat your guests like they’re at their own home. So what we don’t drink Kahlua, a close family friend loves it which means we should have it in case he decides to stop by for happy hour.

The second lesson? I learned how to make a fan favorite White Russian. This drink has been with me for years. When I lived in the fraternity house, cheap vodka and plastic cups were the name of the game. Yet, a shot of Kahlua (with a little bit of milk) in a red solo cup with plastic bottle vodka and whatever ice was on hand made me feel like a king.

The White Russian is the perfect dessert drink but can be enjoyed at any time.  It’s easy to make, looks pretty, has my favorite ingredients, and settles the mind.

Recipe:

  • 2oz Vodka
  • 1oz Kahlua (or any other coffee liqueur)
  • 1-1.5oz half-and-half or milk
  • Combine vodka and Kahlua in a stirring glass, stir until chilled.
  • Pour the combination into a cocktail glass with ice.
  • Shake half-and-half in a shaker to froth, pour over cocktail.

The best things in life are simple. Friendship, love, and family requires no material possessions; yet they are most fulfilling. Cocktails are sometimes the same way; the simple ones are dangerously tasty and leave a lifelong imprint on the mind. Enjoy.
