The Vesper Martini

I have a confession… I am a martini lover. I could construct a three-page paper on how martinis are the most Alpha cocktail known to man – the ingredients, presentation, and energy created by these elegant cocktails are renowned. One special martini, made famous by the 2006 movie Casino Royale, brought a renaissance to the Vesper Martini.

When you hear Daniel Craig order the Vesper Martini in a tuxedo playing poker with millions on the line, the first thought is “wow, that drink has lots of liquor”, the second? “I want one.” I don’t necessarily think it’s the drink the people crave, but the lifestyle that goes with the martini. There is something enticing about being “James Bond” or a spy, solving the worlds biggest problems and doing so with unbridled confidence. If you ever have the opportunity to order a vesper martini, especially when wearing a tux, do it. I won’t explain why, because if you don’t get it, you don’t deserve that feeling.

On a side note, when I was researching this recipe a common message from bartenders came up – when Casino Royale came out and people started ordering this drink, they hated it. Why? Because it is a martini, a very strong martini. This is not an amateur drink or one for the faint of heart. There is quite a bit of liquor so order with confidence and own it. Ever drink vodka on the rocks? Give it a try and once you’ve mastered the admiration of straight vodka order a vesper and it will be pure bliss.

The Vesper is 3 ounces gin, 1 ounce vodka, and ½ ounce Kina Lillet shaken till ice-cold and served in a chilled martini glass with a slice of lemon. Fun fact: martinis are normally stirred, but the Vesper Martini is shaken to dilute the drink a bit more (because of all the liquor). Now back to the ingredients, so for Vodka and Gin pick the best you have access to. For today’s Vesper, that was Kirkland American Vodka and Bombay Saphire gin. Take a lesson from this, it is not the brand name but the raw product that makes a difference. Costco is elite and their vodka is the best price / quality on the market. I’ll die on this hill.

Kina Lillet is actually no longer produced so there are alternatives, the most popular alternative is Kina Blanc but, in all honesty, it is very okay. To make a truly outstanding Vesper Martini, us Kina L’Aero D’Or which is a specialty Aperitif wine.

The combination of good vodka, great gin, and Kina L’Aero D’Or is a trifecta worthy of life’s biggest occasions.
