The Manhattan

Believe it or not, we have something to learn from the older generation. They did some things right, especially when it came to drinks. A few years ago, at my Mom’s retirement party I tried a Manhattan for the first time. Instantaneously, my taste buds took me back the roaring 20s and I was dancing at Gatsby’s mansion. The Manhattan is a smooth drink. The sweet components compliment the harshness of Bourbon. It is similar to sanding down a rough piece of wood. The underlying wood is gorgeous, strong, and filled with a lifetime of memories. Yet sanding is needed to create that smooth surface which looks great and provides a nice touch. The Manhattan is simple to make and only involves a handful of ingredients. The first is Bourbon (or Rye Whiskey). As someone who is just getting into the Bourbon game, I don’t have a plethora of personal favorites. With that being said my go-to bourbon for Manhattan’s is Bulliet. The rest of the ingredients are standard bar essentials; bitters, sweet vermouth, and a maraschino cherry. To really elevate the Manhattan one can add a special Bhaskar recommendation. Adding one drop of ‘orange’ flavored bitters adds a flair to the drink (similar to sprinkles on top).

·       2OZ Bourbon or Rye Whiskey (+ happiness factor)

·       1OZ Sweet Vermouth

·       3 Dashes Bitters

·       OPTIONAL: 1 Drop Orange Bitters

·       1 Maraschino Cherry

1.       In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine bourbon, sweet vermouth, bitters, and orange bitters. Shake thoroughly to chill the drink.

2.       Strain into a cocktail glass, garnish with a maraschino cherry.
